Gambling causing cross-addictions in young people

Gambling counsellors have urged the Government to clamp down on the growing casino trade.

The Minister for Justice has vowed to seek Government approval for a bill outlawing private gambling clubs.

The growth in casinos, internet gaming, and poker machines means that Irish people now spend up to €3bn a year on gambling.

Counsellors have warned of the growing rate of multiple addictions in young men, and say online gambling has contributed greatly to the problem.

The Tabor Lodge Addiction Treatment Centre in Cork has reported alcoholics and drug addicts, especially under the age of 35, now presenting for treatment for gambling problems.

They said gambling is causing an increasing number of cross-addictions in Ireland.
