Owen ready to play with anyone

England’s Michael Owen insists he can adjust his game to accommodate whichever strike partner is selected alongside him at the World Cup.

With Wayne Rooney extremely unlikely to feature in any group game, and a doubt for the tournament as a whole, Owen could be forced to manage without his regular sidekick.

However the 26-year-old, approaching his third World Cup, believes England have strong back-up in case Rooney, who has a broken foot, is ruled out.

He told The Sun: “If he were to miss out, then it would be a big blow. Not only to the country but to his fellow players.

“But there are plenty of top-class strikers. Wayne is a different type of player to many of them but any striker has got their own way of being successful.”

Owen described Darren Bent as a “first-class player”, while Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe should also come into contention for a starting role at the World Cup.

“I don’t think it matters what type of style I play with,” said Owen.

“If you have quality enough to play in an international team, you should be able to adapt to whoever is playing alongside you.”
