Storming start from Kjeldsen
Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen today set a blistering early pace in the first round of the Italian Open in Milan.
Starting on the 10th and taking advantage of the perfect conditions, Kjeldsen birdied his opening four holes and added another at the 17th to approach the turn at five under par.
That was only good enough for a one-shot lead however, Welshman Garry Houston also making the most of the shorter back nine to turn in 32 after five birdies and one bogey.
Compatriot Bradley Dredge was also four under after opening with three birdies and adding another on the 14th, but playing partner Ricardo Gonzalez was having an entirely different experience.
The big-hitting Argentinian birdied the 11th but then ran up double bogeys on the next two holes to slump to three over par and joint last.
Defending champion Steve Webster, who ended a 10-year wait for his maiden tour title at the Arnold Palmer-designed venue last year, had made a steady start with five consecutive pars.
Argentina’s Angel Cabrera, the only member of the world’s top 50 competing this week, was among the afternoon starters along with Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam and England’s John Bickerton, runner-up in the Spanish Open last week.
