McDowell announces plans for new prison on Spike Island
04/05/2006 - 12:55:40Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has announced plans to build a new prison on Spike Island in Cork Harbour.
Mr McDowell said the €70m facility would replace Cork Prison and would hold a total of 450 inmates in separate sections for men, women and young offenders.
He said preliminary plans for the new jail were almost complete and had already been submitted to the Office of Public Works.
