FG says motorists hit by €158m rip-off

03/05/2006 - 08:23:56
Fine Gael has accused petrol retailers of ripping off Irish motorists by introducing price rises that exceed those in other European countries.

The party says pre-tax petrol prices in Ireland have increased by 38% since March 2005, compared to an EU average of 23%.

It also says the Government has added to the situation by increasing taxes on petrol by 4.3% over the same period, compared to an EU average of just 1.2%.

Fine Gael says Irish motorists have lost an estimated €158m in the past 12 months as a result of the rip-off.
