Irish consumers turn to VoIP - survey

01/05/2006 - 11:35:49
Voice over IP - using IP networks like the Internet to make phone calls - is making substantial inroads into Irish homes, according to new research commissioned by Blueface.

Research among readers of the Irish IT newswire ENN found that three out of four people surveyed have already tried VoIP, and most that do then stick with it.

"Call rates are basically very competitive in comparison to traditional telecoms. Judging by the response so far to our survey with Blueface, it seems that's the right price for users," said Ralph Averbuch, marketing & business development Manager for ENN.

"The survey shows that while half of respondents are using or expect to use VoIP mostly in the home, 45% expect to use it at work, too."

The ENN Telecoms Usage Survey, which was sponsored by the Irish broadband telephone company Blueface, also revealed the following:

* 61% have broadband both at home and at work. This is a comfortable majority, but numbers were expected to be higher among ENN's IT-literate audience.

* 43% say they would prefer their telecoms bill to be combined with mobile charges on one bill.

* 91% said they would describe VoIP as "cost effective".

* 40% said they were not sure whether VoIP will increase reliability and service, although 71% believe VoIP will increase their use of integrated solutions for business.
