US Open attracts large entry
A total of 8,584 players, the third highest in history, have entered for the US Open to be played June 15-18 at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York.
They range from 13-year-old Ryan Simpson to 75-year-old Ordean Olson, a Florida professional.
Among the foreign applicants is Doh Missewou, a 31-year-old from the African country of Togo who has already tried and failed to qualify for the British Open.
Seventy golfers, including eight past champions, are currently fully exempt.
They include Europeans Thomas Bjorn, Luke Donald, Nick Dougherty, Niclas Fasth, Kenneth Ferrie, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Peter Hedblom, David Howell, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul McGinley, Edoardo Molinari, Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and Henrik Stenson.
Others in the world’s top 50 at the end of May also earn exemptions.
