Medical Council moves to clarify Dr James Barry situation

27/04/2006 - 13:22:37
The Medical Council has moved to clarify the situation surrounding a Cork GP who had been accused of sexually assaulting his patients.

Dr James Barry had been charged with more than 200 counts of sexual and indecent assault on female patients that he has admitted videotaping without their knowledge.

However, the charges have been dropped following a European court ruling that the delay in bringing the prosecution breached his human rights.

Dr Barry has claimed that the State's decision not to appeal this ruling totally exonerates him of any wrongdoing.

However, the Medical Council said today that it had written a letter to the doctor reminding him that he is still banned from practising by a 1995 High Court order.

The council also said it would fix a date shortly for an inquiry by its fitness to practice committee.
