Momtic caught the eye on the Newmarket gallops this morning as he tuned up for his seasonal reappearance in the Group Two betfred.com Mile at Sandown on Saturday.

The Shinko Forest five-year-old proved most progressive in 2005, winning three valuable handicaps – the last being a neck success from Elliots World at York in August.

William Jarvis’ chestnut certainly appeared ready for the rise in grade at the weekend as he worked on is own over six furlongs under Alan Munro this morning.

Jarvis said: “I’ve been very happy with his preparations this spring and I am hoping that he will run well on Saturday.

“Running him in a Group Two represents a significant step up in class and perhaps he may not be quite good enough to win.

“But there are a lot of positives in starting him off at Sandown as he won a competitive handicap there at the same meeting last year – plus it looks as if it will be a smallish field.

“I will be disappointed if at some point this year we can’t pick up a Group race with him.

“Whether that is a Group race in England or a Group Three on the continent remains to be seen.”
