Benitez keeps Fowler in the dark
Rafael Benitez admits he has made up his mind about whether Robbie Fowler will remain at Anfield.
But the Liverpool manager is keeping his thoughts to himself and the supporters guessing.
The former Manchester City striker looks set to return to the side against West Ham tonight after missing the FA Cup semi-final victory over Chelsea as he was ineligible.
Fowler, 31, has found his scoring touch since arriving back at his beloved Anfield in January on a short-term contract.
He has scored four goals in his last five games, with Liverpool winning the lot to collect 15 points.
Fowler’s stock has risen and Benitez said: “If he can keep scoring it will be easier for me.
“We all know he has a lot of passion for the club. I know what I want to do but I need to talk to my staff.
“We will continue working with Robbie. When a player is playing every game he cannot improve a lot in his physical condition.
“We cannot expect to see the best of him now. Perhaps in pre-season we will see him progress but we need to decide on his future first.”
Benitez is ready to freshen his side up for this dress rehearsal of the FA Cup final in his attempt to overtake Manchester United and secure second spot.
The odds are against them but the feelgood factor has increased around the club following the victory over Chelsea at the weekend.
With a game to follow on Saturday against Aston Villa, Benitez said: “Maybe we will rest some of the squad.
“I will need to check during training which players are fitter than others.
“It is not easy as some players are playing a lot of games and we have another one on Saturday.”
Benitez expects a difficult game at Upton Park against a team promoted from the Coca-Cola Championship only last May.
He said: “West Ham are a very good side. They seem to have a good spirit and a clear idea of what to do during games.”
