Moussaoui's mother leaves France for US verdict

25/04/2006 - 12:24:53
Zacarias Moussaoui’s mother, describing her life as “hell”, today left France for the United States to be there when a federal jury decides whether her son faces life in prison or the death penalty.

“This has been going on for four years, but now my life is hell. It’s hell and that’s all,” Aicha El Wafi said at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport.

Moussaoui, a 37-year-old Frenchman of Moroccan descent, is the only person charged in the United States in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

“I feel too much pain to speak,” his mother added, before boarding a United Airlines plane to Washington.

The jury deliberated for three hours yesterday after hearing closing arguments in the six-week trial. Deliberations were to resume today.

The federal jury in Alexandria, Virginia, has already decided that Moussaoui was responsible for death in the attacks, and now faces two choices: death or life in prison. The judge will be bound to impose their decision.

Moussaoui was in a US jail on September 11, but the jury ruled that lies he told federal agents when he was arrested in August 2001 on immigration violations allowed the plot to go forward.
