Benitez wins award in Spain

24/04/2006 - 15:39:22
Rafael Benitez insisted he is happy at Liverpool after winning a top award in his native Spain.

The man who famously led the club to the European Cup in his debut season was named Coach of the Year for 2005 by the regional group, La Comunidad de Madrid.

Benitez was honoured in the Spanish capital at the annual Seven Stars of Sport awards ceremony.

The former Valencia boss has been continually linked with a move to Real Madrid but re-iterated that switching clubs was not on his agenda.

Benitez said: “I am very happy at Liverpool and enjoying life in England.”

He added on www.liverpoolfc.tv: “I am very proud to accept this award.

“But it is recognition for everyone at Liverpool including the players, backroom staff and the supporters.

“They have been magnificent since I came to the club.”

Benitez has an FA Cup final to look forward to against West Ham on May 13 and they will be participating in the Champions League again next season.

His award comes hard on the heels of midfielder Steven Gerrard being named the Professional Footballers’ Association’s player of the year.
