Galway unchanged for NFL decider

21/04/2006 - 17:42:40
Galway manager Peter Ford has opted not to make any alterations to his side for Sunday's NFL Division One final against 2004 winners Kerry (Gaelic Grounds, throw-in 5.30pm).

Galway racked up their fifth League win on the trot when beating neighbours Mayo by 1-11 to 1-6 last weekend, and will line out unchanged against the Kingdom.

It has been a big turnaround for Ford's charges in recent weeks after they picked up just one of six available points in their first three NFL games.

Much will depend again on the Tribesmen's attacking sextet on Sunday.

Galway have scored 8-84 in their eight League games to date with the half-forward unit of Derek Savage (1-11), Matthew Clancy (1-0) and Michael Donnellan (0-3) contributing 2-18, and the dynamic full-forward line of Michael Meehan (6-18), Padraic Joyce (0-28) and Sean Armstrong (0-7) accumulating 6-53.

The undeniable form of Caltra clubman Meehan earned him the Vodafone GAA Footballer of the Month award for March.

His manager Ford will be hoping it is third time lucky for the county's senior footballers in a League final. Galway have lost their last two League final appearances by a point - going down to Kerry by 3-11 to 1-16 in 2004, and to Mayo in 2001 (0-13 to 0-12).

GALWAY (NFL v Kerry) - A Keane; D Meehan, K Fitzgerald, D Burke; A Burke, D Blake, M Comer; P Clancy, N Coleman; M Clancy, D Savage, M Donnellan; M Meehan, P Joyce, S Armstrong.
