PDs prepare for annual national conference in Limerick

21/04/2006 - 08:31:22
The Progressive Democrats are gathering in Limerick today for the start of their annual national conference.

Up to 800 delegates are due to attend the get-together, with consumer champion Eddie Hobbs and Ulster Unionist Chris McGimpsey among the guest speakers.

The agenda includes transport, the environment, immigration and the Irish language.

A motion calling for a possible pre-election pact with Fianna Fáil will also be debated, but it is likely to be rejected as the PDs have previously preferred to stand as an independent party.

The party is due to give a press briefing on tax and economic policy on Sunday at which it is expected to announce proposals for a major reform of tax bands.

The proposals are believed to include measures that would see everyone earning up to €50,000 stop paying tax at the 42% rate.

The cut-off point at present is around €28,000.
