Investigation launched into work of Drogheda consultant

21/04/2006 - 15:16:22
A major investigation has been launched into the work practices of a consultant at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda.

The locum consultant orthopaedic surgeon has had his practice restricted for nearly 2 years.

Concern about the surgeon’s work was first expressed by colleagues in 2004. The HSE imposed restrictions on the consultant’s work in May of that year and he’s still prohibited from carrying out any operations.

It launched an external review of the case and a report is expected to be presented to the authority in the coming weeks. It’s understood the report was delayed because it took time to find a UK-based expert who was free to carry out the work.

This investigation follows a damning report into the practices of obstetrician Dr. Michael Neary who also worked at the hospital.
