Harney calls for health workers to help reform
Minister for Health Mary Harney has called health service workers to engage in discussions to bring about urgent reform of the sector.
The Progressive Democrats leader says reform could start immediately by providing better GP cover out of hours and more efficient use of hospital beds.
Speaking at the opening of the PDs Annual Conference in Limerick, she made a direct plea for doctors and consultants to engage in reform of the health service.
In a lengthy speech, she said, “Reform threatens absolutely no-one. If the economy continues to be well managed, resources will not be a problem.”
She also said that “more resources would be provided as long as those working within the service are prepared to engage in reform”.
She went on to say that public spending in health would be €20bn by 2012.
