Petrol retailers call on Govt to cap fuel prices

20/04/2006 - 15:59:47
The Irish Petrol Retailers' Association (IPRA) this afternoon issued a call on the Government to set a maximum price for petrol.

Unleaded petrol is set to hit €1.20 per litre tomorrow, as the price of crude oil hits new highs on international markets.

The IPRA wants the Government to create a national emergency plan to prepare for the possibility of a global energy crisis.

Chief executive Oliver Lupton stressed that something must be done.

“If the international oil companies are saying: ‘Look, we can’t deal with the free market in a small little country like Ireland', then the Government has to take notice, stand-up to the wire and say: ‘We've got to do something here because this is a scarce resource,’” he said.

“It is in the national interest that the Government be involved and involve all the parties that are connected to the fuel industry.”
