Oil-price rises ‘may force small firms to shed jobs’

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) has warned of hundreds of potential job losses due to the rising international price of oil.

The association said today that Irish companies could go out of business if the costs of petrol, gas and electricity continue to spiral upwards.

ISME says the economy will suffer a serious blow unless the Government comes up with a national plan to find alternative energy sources.

"Small business are looking at a bleak future if the price of oil continues to go up, especially in the absence of a national energy policy," said ISME spokesman Mark Fielding.

"Small businesses are unable to pass on those cost increases, so it means that jobs will be lost and businesses will go under if this continues."
