Egyptian police have arrested 22 young men on suspicion of plotting terrorist attacks against tourists and other targets, a statement from the Interior Ministry said today.

Egypt suffered three terrorist attacks targeting tourists in 2005.

Bombings in Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik in July killed more than 60 people, many of them foreigners.

Identifying the group as Al-Ta’efa al-Mansourah, Arabic for The Victorious Sect, the Interior Ministry said the men ranged in age from 19 to 31 years.

With financing through donations and alms collected at mosques, the group was allegedly preparing to launching attacks on tourist areas, natural gas lines, Muslim and Christian clerics and what the group called “deviant young men in tourists areas,” police said.

It was also gathering information from the internet about making explosives and intended to buy land to establish a training camp, according to the statement.
