Rams want to keep Barnes

18/04/2006 - 13:49:39
Derby are in talks with 17-year-old prodigy Giles Barnes in a bid to keep him at the club until 2009 despite interest from the Premiership.

Barnes has caught the eye this season with some dazzling midfield displays and Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle are among those linked with a move for the youngster.

A spokesman for the Rams said: “Talks have been ongoing with Giles for several weeks.

“We don’t comment on transfer speculation and as far as we’re concerned we’re looking at extending his contract.

“His current deal runs out in 2008 and the plan is to extend it by another year.”
