Hain: No devolution unless parties meet deadline
The Northern Secretary Peter Hain stated this afternoon that devolution will be off the agenda for the foreseeable future if parties cannot elect an Executive by November.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Peter Hain said there was nothing more that those outside Northern politics could do to facilitate the process.
He warned that the North was missing out on the benefits of devolution enjoyed by the assemblies in Scotland and Wales.
“The blunt truth is that Northern Ireland is in great danger of being left behind, as not only the rest of the United Kingdom strides on successfully, but as the Republic of Ireland continues to be one of the biggest global success stories of our generation,” Mr. Hain said.
“It's now for Northern Ireland politicians to catch up, and catch up fast. Northern Ireland’s people demand nothing less.”
