18/04/2006 - 17:41:45
Five men arrested during a foiled armed raid on a bookmakers remain in Garda custody tonight.

It is alleged the men attempted to rob the bookie’s shop in Deansgrange at about 8pm last night. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

No shots had been fired and no-one was injured during the incident.

Two men are being held at Shankill Garda Station, two in Dun Laoghaire station and a fifth at Blackrock.

Officers are also investigating an aggravated burglary at a property in Kinvara Road, Cabra, at around the same time.

A Garda spokeswoman said it is believed two men made their way in to the home of a bookmaker who was returning from Fairyhouse Racecourse under false pretences, telling his wife, who was there alone, that they worked with him.

“They waited for the man to arrive home and took whatever cash he had on him,” she said. “They also took the keys of his car, which was later found abandoned in another area of Cabra.

“The family were very shook up but they were not physically injured.

“Investigations are continuing.”

No arrests have yet been made.
