BA puts up fuel surcharge on longer routes

18/04/2006 - 15:30:55
Passengers flying long-haul routes with British Airways were hit today with an increased fuel levy to cover sky-high oil prices.

British Airways put up its surcharge on tickets from £30 (€43.40) to £35 (€50.60) on a one-way flight, the sixth increase since introducing it in May 2004.

It justified the move on the grounds that its fuel bill for the year beginning this month was now expected to total £2.2bn (€3.2bn).

This is £600m (€867.7m) more than a year earlier and 50% higher than when it last provided guidance to its investors.

BA added that the surcharge on short-haul tickets would remain unchanged at £8 (€11.60) for a one-way trip.
