Lennon: We'll be up for Rangers

17/04/2006 - 13:09:45
Celtic skipper Neil Lennon is convinced an Old Firm showdown is just what is needed to get the pulses racing.

The champions lacked the spark to take the points against Hibernian with the destination of the trophy assured.

Celtic were presented with the Bank of Scotland Premier League silverware after the 1-1 draw with Hibernian.

But Lennon has promised the arrival of Rangers to Parkhead will pump up the players and fans again.

He said: “It will be something for the lads to get their teeth into.

“We’ve missed a competitive edge in the last few games but with Rangers here on Sunday followed by Hearts at Tynecastle it’s two massive games and we can have an enormous say in who could finish second this season.

“Old Firm games are always good to play in but I’m sure our fans will enjoy this one on Sunday because we have already got ourselves across the line.

“I’m sure they’ll get right behind us, even though the trophy has already been won.

“Since that first game at Ibrox at the end of August we have come back well and nobody back then would have guessed at the way the season would have finished.

“We will be here in front of our own fans and we will want to win this one as much as we want to win any Old Firm game.”

The Northern Irishman admitted he savoured the end-of-match celebrations, especially after blowing the title in dramatic fashion last season.

Celtic were three minutes away from another championship before Scott McDonald handed Rangers the prize.

Lennon added: “You dream about days like that. My family and some of my best friends were there. It was brilliant.

“I wanted to savour the moment of walking out there to get the trophy. I was saying to a few of the boys before the game to enjoy it because you never know how often it is going to come around.

“If I’ve learned anything from last season it’s that you have to make the most of these days.

“If we can get as close as possible to the 100 points that will be great but I think we have done well to get where we are considering how we started the season.”
