Man shot dead at police checkpoint
A man was shot dead by police at a vehicle checkpoint in Northern Ireland today.
Officers fired a number of rounds during the incident on Church Street in Ballynahinch, Co Down.
The man shot dead was the driver of the car, police confirmed.
Three other men and two women, who were also in the vehicle, were arrested.
Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Naula O’Loan was told about the shooting and staff have launched a full investigation.
The shooting is understood to have happened near the East Down Institute Technical College.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland refused to disclose the circumstances which led to officers opening fire.
But a spokesman confirmed: “Police operating a vehicle checkpoint in Church Street, Ballynahinch this morning have discharged a number of shots.
“The male driver of a vehicle has died.
“Three males and two females who had been travelling in the vehicle have been arrested. The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland is now investigating.”
