Torrential rain kills 21 in China

Torrential rains in central and eastern China have killed 21 people and destroyed thousands of houses, the government said today.

Storms in the central province of Hubei killed 11 people and forced 37,000 to flee their homes, the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing local civil affairs authorities. It said 11,000 houses were destroyed.

In Jiangxi province in the east, rains killed 10 people and caused 100 million dollars in damage, the government said.

Local authorities in both areas were distributing tents and bedding, Xinhua said.

It said the central government has dispatched teams with more aid to the regions.
