Socialist Party annual conference to take place in Maynooth

15/04/2006 - 08:52:04
The annual conference of the Socialist Party gets underway later today in Maynooth, Co Kildare.

Issues facing Irish society, such as what the party claims is the privatisation agenda of the Fianna Fáil-PD coalition, will be thrashed out.

Particular emphasis will focus on the privatisation of Aer Lingus with a view to mounting a mass demonstration in opposition to the plan.

Party deputy Joe Higgins said, “We would strongly urge a massive campaign of trade union opposition to the privatisation of the national airline.

"We say that such a privatisation following on from the disaster of the sugar beet industry, the eircom privatisation and the Irish Ferries debacle, which was once a privatised company, all argue very loudly for maintaining Aer Lingus in public ownership.”
