Strachan refuses to enter chanting debate
Gordon Strachan claims he is too “naïve” and “scared” to enter the debate on sectarian chanting.
UEFA this week cleared rivals Rangers of sectarian chanting, but the subject of discriminatory behaviour from fans has again surfaced.
“I don’t know the words to all these songs,” explained Strachan. “I saw something on television that I’d never noticed before, ever.
“In my 30 years of being a footballer – I didn’t know the words to some of the songs that are sung.
“I’d really need to sit down and think about it. It’s a very, very touchy subject and I’d be scared to open my mouth here without really thinking about what I was saying.
“It’s a right problem and it’s the same with racism. You only need a couple of morons to go to one end and start it. You really need to watch what you’re doing.
“It is very difficult. There is a society problem, obviously but we do need to watch we don’t get too politically correct.
“I am probably quite naïve about it and that’s why I’m reluctant to speak about it.
“When you’re at a dinner party and somebody brings something up that you’re not really sure about, you tend to shut your mouth and just listen to people.
“If I’m at a dinner party and people are talking football, that’s fine, but if it’s politics or finance I’ve a problem. I just sit there quietly. That’s where I am just now.”
