Truckers threaten legal action over Dublin city ban
Truckers are threatening to take legal action to stop Dublin City Council from banning heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) from the streets of the city centre.
The threat follows a decision by councillors last night to ban all trucks with five axles or more from entering the area between the two canals from the hours of 7am and 7pm.
The measure will come into force two months after the Dublin Port Tunnel opens in November of this year.
The ban will force large trucks to travel up the M50 and use the Port Tunnel, but it will not apply to smaller four-axle vehicles until the completion of a planned upgrade of the motorway in two years' time.
The Irish Road Haulage Association says it agrees with the idea of the Port Tunnel and the removal of trucks from the city centre, but it believes the city council's planned HGV strategy is ridiculous.
Spokesman Jimmy Quinn claimed it would prevent many trucks from making deliveries to city-centre businesses and his association would be seeking legal advice on the matter immediately.
