Tributes paid to former Fine Gael senator
The death of a former Fine Gael senator is a blow to the party, it was claimed today.
Party leader Enda Kenny described the late Cllr Pat Codd from Co Wexford as a devoted and talented public servant.
Cllr Codd served as a Fine Gael Senator from 1975 to 1977 and as a local councillor from 1979 to 1985.
He was elected chairman of Wexford County Council from 1984 to 1985.
Mr Kenny said: “His death is a blow to the Fine Gael party and the Fine Gael family. He was a big man not just in presence, but in understanding, ability and heart.
The Mayo TD described Cllr Codd as a diligent and painstaking chairman of his local County Council.
“Pat believed absolutely in the power of politics to make a real difference to people’s day-to-day lives,” Mr Kenny added.
“His constant hard work on his constituents’ behalf was that belief in action. Because of that, he inspired confidence in politics and trust in the political process.”
Cllr Codd is the third former Fine Gael senator to die in recent weeks after Senator John Mannion in Galway City and Senator Toddy Byrne in Kinvara.
Mr Kenny who had known and worked with Cllr Codd for 30 years, offered his sympathies to his widow Evelyn, sons Mark and John and daughters Mary, Sarah and Joan.
