Connolly forgives father for sexual abuse

10/04/2006 - 16:21:06
Scottish comedian Billy Connolly has finally forgiven his father for sexually abusing him as a child.

The 63-year-old Mrs Brown actor, who shared a bed with his dad during his pre-teens, only revealed the extent of the abuse after his father's death in 1989.

But he has now vowed to put the painful memories behind him.

In an Australian interview to be televised later this year, Connolly says: "It sounds a bit conceited that you're going to forgive someone but you can - you can even forgive dead people. Just because they're dead doesn't mean you can't forgive things.

"I think of the nice guy that I knew. I wanted him to love me while I was around and I think he did. I think he didn't know how to.

"But what went on between us was an aberration.

"I can deal with it. I don't find it a problem at all and I like talking to other kids, guys that it happened to.

"I don't want to look like a victim"
