McDowell makes plans for stab-proof vests for gardaí
07/04/2006 - 15:57:59Minister for Justice says there is a tender process underway to provide gardaí with stab-proof vests.
Garda representative associations have been calling for their provision for several years.
Michael McDowell says there have been trials carried out on different models of vests to choose the most suitable for this country.
He says he is taking all reasonable steps to ensure the gardaí's safety.
Mr McDowell said: "Not every Garda wants to wear one, and the issue as to what extent they will be mandatory once they are made available in consultation with members of the force itself."
