Bird flu expert group to meet

07/04/2006 - 09:01:47
The Government's advisory group on bird flu is due to meet today following confirmation that the H5N1 strain of the virus has spread to Scotland.

The deadly strain has been detected in a dead swan found in a harbour in Fife last week.

A cordon has been established around the village where the bird was discovered and the Scottish authorities are taking measures to prevent the spread of the illness.

The Government's expert group on the matter is due to assess the latest available information today before deciding if any changes are needed to Ireland's preparations for a possible outbreak.

As of last night, the Department of Agriculture was still insisting that there was no cause for concern.

However, Labour Party TD Mary Upton has claimed the arrival of bird flu is inevitable given the close proximity of Scotland.
