Cork handed Shelbourne tie in Setanta Cup semi

04/04/2006 - 15:36:18
Cork City will play Shelbourne at Turner’s Cross in the semi-final of the Setanta Cup on Monday night.

Shels drew 1-1 with Derry City at Tolka Park last night while Irish League champions, Linfield romped to a 6-0 win over 10-man Glentoran at Windsor Park.

So City will meet Shels in Cork in the first of the semi-finals with Linfield taking on Drogheda at Windsor Park 24 hours later.

“I am happy to have avoided Linfield and I think Shels are the bigger attraction down here. It’s a huge game for both teams and the fact that Shels’ have two ex-Cork players adds a bit extra to it,” said City boss Damien Richardson.

“The way the two lads (Liam Kearney and Greg O’Halloran) have been talking things up adds even more spice to it and we can’t wait for it to roll around now on Monday,” he added.

“I think we will need to prove that we are the best in the country again.

“I think we have shown that we can meet the demands of these big games with Shels’ or whoever and we are looking forward to it.

“It’s the biggest game of the season so far.

“There will be a sell-out, full-house crowd, an electric atmosphere and it will need a big performance from us on the night,” he added.

Derry’s Ciaran Martyn scored a dramatic last minute equaliser to deny Shels a home semi-final.
