Tax take for first 3 months of year exceeds expectations

The tax take for the first three months of the year has been more than expected.

According to exchequer figures released this afternoon, tax revenue for the year to date amounted to €10.7bn, which was €436m more than forecast.

Year on year tax receipts rose by 19.1% compared to the profiled increase of 14.3%.

Capital receipts for the first three months amounted to €926m, compared to €259m for the same period last year.

Overall the Exchequer surplus stood at €2.42bn.

Minister for Finance Brian Cowen said the figures indicated that the public finances were on track and supported his view that the economy would grow by more than 4.5% this year.
