04/04/2006 - 08:09:59Minister for Justice Michael McDowell is expected to bring a draft bill on reforming defamation law before the Cabinet today.
A group headed by senior counsel Brian Murray will also present the findings of a report into privacy.
The proposals are the first step in paving the way for tough new privacy laws as well as revised legislation on defamation.
The setting up of a press council is believed to be one of the provisions being proposed.
The majority of members will be chosen from outside the media, but will include representatives from the NUJ and groups representing newspaper owners and the magazine sector.
