Bombs explode at polling stations
02/04/2006 - 10:33:17Bombs exploded today at three polling stations in southern Thailand, injuring four soldiers and a police officer, police said.
The explosions all occurred about 20 minutes after polls closed at 3pm (8am Irish time), said Narathiwat provincial police chief Maj. Gen. Yongyuth Charoenwanit.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra called the snap elections three years early in an attempt to end growing anti-government protests demanding his resignation.
Narathiwat is one of Thailand’s three Muslim-majority provinces in the south plagued by a separatist insurgency that has left more than 1,300 dead since January 2004.
