Rabbitte issues warning to union movement

02/04/2006 - 11:14:17
Labour party leader Pat Rabbitte has issued a warning to the union movement.

Last night he set out his party's priorities as he rallied the troops at the national conference, ahead of the next General Election.

Deputy Rabbitte focused on changes to the health service, ruled out increasing taxes, and repeated his call for both government parties to be removed from office.

He also hit out at the trade union movement for preventing improvement to the driving test backlog.

"Change in the workplace and the modernisation of public services should be negotiated but no interest group has the right to veto changes which are necessary for the public good," he said.

"When 130,000 young people can't get a driving test Labour will not shrug its shoulders and walk away. The rights of those young people and the impertinence of road safety override any other consideration.”
