Higgins: Labour values will not be compromised

01/04/2006 - 11:13:34
Michael D Higgins, the President of the Labour Party, has warned other parties that want to co-operate with Labour that there are bedrock values that will not be compromised.

At the party's conference in Dublin, Mr Higgins said the next election must be about rejecting what he called the extreme individualism of the right.

He said a decade of right-of-centre government had severely damaged politics and destroyed trust.

The party is to announce a number of pre-election initiatives at the one-day annual conference.

Crime, health and childcare are among the issues that will be discussed at the conference.
