Family lays wreath for missing trawler skipper

01/04/2006 - 11:40:28
The family of a skipper missing since his trawler sank off the south-east coast on Wednesday night will today lay a wreath at sea.

Despite extensive searches, the bodies of Glenn Cott, skipper of the Maggie B, and crew member Jan Sankowski, 45, from Poland, have not yet been recovered.

At noon, Navy vessel the LE Ciara will take Mr Cott's family, from Ballycotton in Co Cork, to where the 15-metre trawler went down around five miles off the Hook Peninsula.

A third crew member, Kriston Pawtowski, also from Poland, was found clinging to a life-raft and suffering from severe hypothermia about an hour after a distress signal was sent from the vessel at 11pm.

Hundreds of people have taken part in the massive search operation, with attempts to recover their bodies continuing today with an extensive shoreline search along the coast as far as Carnsore Point.

``The navy are taking Mr Cott's family out to lay a wreath where she went down,'' a spokesman for the Irish Coastguard today.

``The Kilmore Quay life boat, fishing boats and the navy are still continuing to look for the men.''
