Serbia's leaders meet in bid to speed up arrest of Mladic

31/03/2006 - 13:46:08
Faced with possible European Union sanctions, Serbia’s deputy prime minister today urged an emergency leadership meeting to hasten the arrest of war crimes fugitive Gen Ratko Mladic.

Miroljub Labus said that the meeting that would include Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and President Boris Tadic should be held “in order to establish civilian control over all military and police secret services”.

Labus’ appeal came as Serbia neared an EU deadline to arrest the wartime Bosnian Serb army commander by April 5 or face sanctions.

Labus spoke a day after Serbia-Montenegro Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic claimed that Serbia’s secret service knows where Mladic is hiding, but has failed to arrest him because some security force members are still loyal to him.

Draskovic suggested that Kostunica was not in control of his intelligence network.
