Fortune set for Old Trafford departure

31/03/2006 - 15:28:55
Quinton Fortune will be released by Manchester United at the end of the season.

The injury-plagued South African has been told by Alex Ferguson his contract will not be renewed in the summer, bringing to an end a seven-year stint with the Red Devils following his arrival from Atletico Madrid in August 1999.

Although rarely a first-team starter during his early days at Old Trafford, Fortune has come into his own during the past few years, particularly after adapting to the left full-back role and central midfield.

However, his chances of forcing his way into Ferguson’s plans on a regular basis this season were wrecked by a knee injury suffered in pre-season which has virtually ruled him out of the entire campaign.

Although the 28-year-old did return to reserve team action earlier this month, he suffered a twisted knee in a second string encounter at Middlesbrough.

In total, Fortune made 126 appearances for United, the last of which came in last season’s FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal.
