Greens appeal to students in sweat shops battle
The Green Party today urged students to stop being slaves to style by covering up clothing slogans with No Logo stickers.
In a bid to raise awareness about the working conditions of the millions of people around the world working in sweat shops, the Greens are calling on young people to block out brand names.
Eamon Ryan, Dublin South TD, said the idea is to put out the message that young people can be stylish without slogans, but he said it was not an exercise in telling people what to do.
“Instead it is encouraging students to ask questions about where their clothes come from, where their money goes to and what sort of peer pressure young people are put under to wear the right thing,” he said.
“We have already received a huge response to the competition and we will be announcing the winners in a few weeks time.”
The Green Party said schools around the country would take part in national No Logo Day by covering up their logos joining in a range of action projects and debates.
No Logo day also aims to raise awareness about bullying and marketing tactics employed by big business.
Today is also the closing date for the No Logo Day Style Wars competition which asks students to design and create an outfit for less than €25.
