SDLP vice-chairman resigns over party’s direction

30/03/2006 - 08:19:17
The vice-chairman of the SDLP has resigned, claiming the party is being run by a clique that is out of touch with the grassroots and the electorate.

Announcing his decision last night, Eddie Espie said the SDLP had once been rooted in communities and had given value and understanding to the worries, fears and hopes of nationalists.

However, he said it was now lacking in political leadership and had been polluted by obstinacy and ruined by pig-headed individuals with no discipline.

He said policy was being made by outsiders with no political understanding and who ignored the party membership.

A spokesman said the SDLP regretted Mr Espie's decision, adding that the party had already embarked on a process of change, restructuring and renewal that would continue into the future.
