One killed and several injured in chemical incident at quarry
One person died and 11 were taken to hospital today following an accident at a quarry in Co Kilkenny.
The chemical incident occurred just after lunchtime at a limestone quarry at Bennetsbridge, five miles outside Kilkenny city.
A Health Service Executive spokeswoman said the injured are being treated for burns and other injuries at St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny and the hospital’s emergency plan has been put into action.
“Ambulances attended the scene and have transferred 11 patients to St Luke’s General Hospital in Kilkenny, where they are receiving treatment for injuries occurring as a result of an accident at the plant,” she said.
“Their conditions are presently being assessed. It has been confirmed that there was one fatality involved.
“The management at St Luke’s General Hospital have appealed to members of the public, if at all possible, to avoid the Accident & Emergency Unit for the next number of hours and consult a GP unless they are in need of urgent medical attention.”
