Cullen launches campaign on new penalty points offences

30/03/2006 - 13:30:49
Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has launched an information campaign about the planned expansion of the penalty points scheme next week.

From Monday, 31 new offences will come under the scheme, including failing to stop at a traffic light, failing to comply with traffic signs and road markings, dangerous overtaking and driving an unfit vehicle.

Driving on a hard shoulder, a footpath or a cycle lane will become offences attracting penalty points, as will parking in a disabled space.

A newspaper and television advertising campaign is getting underway today to inform motorists of the changes, while a dedicated website has also been set up to provide information about the new offences.

Launching the campaign today, Mr Cullen said nine out of 10 road deaths were caused by driver behaviour and he hoped expanding the penalty points scheme would help tackle this.
