British govt to fund suicide task force proposals in North

The British government has agreed to fully fund the recommendations of a suicide task force in the North which are due to be published later today.

London has already provisionally allocated £1m (€1.4m) to suicide prevention in the North, but today's announcement will almost double that figure to £1.9m (€2.7m).

Two hundred and 13 people have taken their own lives in the North in the past year, almost double the number killed in road accidents.

Although the problem affects all socio-economic groups, the figures tend to show that young people in deprived areas are most inclined towards suicide.
