HRC seeks more consultation on PSNI use of Taser guns

The North's Human Rights Commission has expressed renewed concern about the planned use of Taser guns by the PSNI.

The Policing Board is due to take a decision today on whether to introduce the weapons on a limited, pilot basis as a less-lethal alternative to firearms.

However, the HRC has expressed concern that only two weeks were set aside for consultations on the use of the Taser, which delivers a massive electric shock that renders the victim incapacitated.

Chief commissioner Monica McWilliams says the case for the new weapons has not been made and is urging the Policing Board to take more time to consider the implications of their introduction.
