Law to star in radio play inspired by Beckett work

28/03/2006 - 17:21:45
Jude Law is to star in a radio play based on the work of Irish playwright Samuel Beckett, it was announced today.

The Oscar-nominated actor will appear in a specially-commissioned drama directed by Anthony Minghella.

The Son is intended as the highlight of BBC Radio 3’s Beckett centenary celebrations.

It is the story of a grieving father and son remembering their dead wife and mother.

Law plays the son while David Threlfall and Juliet Stevenson play his parents. Minghella will write, direct and introduce the piece.

Law said of the play: “It's a puzzle of words - a great excuse to sit and talk for a couple of hours. It's lovely working on something by a great writer who was inspired by a great writer.”

Radio 3 is marking the centenary of Beckett's birth with a series of newly-commissioned dramas and a rare interview with the writer's muse Billie Whitelaw.

The Son will be broadcast on April 1.
