Mandate to seek €1-an-hour pay rise for retail workers
27/03/2006 - 11:01:36The trade union representing workers in the retail sector has announced its intention to seek pay increases of at least €1-an-hour for its members.
Speaking at the union's biennial conference in Killarney today, Mandate general secretary John Douglas said it was unfair and unjust that workers were paid an average of just €9-an-hour in an industry that generates billions of euros in profits every year.
Mandate doesn't participate in social partnership because it believes the process has failed to address the widening gap between lower and middle-income workers.
It also believes it can achieve more for its members by negotiating directly with employers.
